Why karate
What training does, beyond the kicks
Karate is a full-body workout and a self-development program in one. For kids it builds confidence, focus and respect; for adults it is practical self-defence and a year-round way to stay fit. You work at your own pace and set your own goals, and our instructors help you reach them.
Mind
Improves memory retention, confidence and problem solving.
Body
Builds balance, coordination, strength and fitness.
Spirit
Grows patience and perseverance.
The team
Train alongside the best
Our chief instructor, Sensei Maurice Matteucci (5th Dan), has more than 45 years of practice and teaching across three karate styles, and is an international kata and kumite referee. He leads a team of ten ranked instructors, including Senpai Jenny, a former female captain of the Australian team at the 2016 Shotokan Karate-do International Federation World Championships.
Trust
Recognised, accountable, and safe for kids
Traditional Karate Academy was recognised by the Australian Karate Federation in March 2002. We are affiliated with the World Karate Federation and the World Shito-Ryu Karate Federation, and our instructors hold Working with Children Checks.

How it works
Easy to start, easy to stop
No sign-up fee, no pressure. Here is everything a first-timer needs to know before walking in.
- Just turn up. Arrive at any scheduled class 10 to 15 minutes early to fill out a short waiver. You do not need to call ahead.
- Wear comfortable clothes. A t-shirt and tracksuit pants are fine for your first classes; we train in bare feet.
- No lock-in contracts. We bill by direct debit, set up and cancelled any time. We also take cash and cheque. (Sorry, no credit cards.)
- Watch first if you like. Parents are welcome to observe any class before joining.
