Classes for every age and level

We teach Shito-Ryu karate from age four to adult, beginner to black belt, across our three dojos. You work at your own pace; our instructors help you set goals and reach them. Below is what each class is, and what your first one looks like.

Age streams

Find the right class

From 4 years

Little Samurai

Our youngest students start here. The Little Samurai classes build fitness, strength, flexibility, coordination and motor skills, and channel a lot of energy into focus, discipline and goal-setting. Once a child shows the concentration and skill to move on, usually around 5 to 6 depending on maturity, they progress into our junior classes.

Kids, by belt

Children's classes

Children's classes are grouped by belt level, from beginners through to coloured belts. Karate gives kids more than self-defence: confidence, concentration, balance, real friendships, respect for others, and the habit of working toward a goal one grading at a time.

Adults & teens

Adults & Teens

Practical self-defence and a genuine full-body workout, taught year-round. Whether you are starting from scratch or returning after years away, you train at your own pace alongside a friendly group.

By invitation

Competition squad

For students ready to test themselves, we run competition classes at the Yangebup Honbu Dojo. We believe the challenges and achievements of competition help students progress in their karate journey. Entry is by invitation from your instructor.

Green belt and up

Kobudo (Okinawan weapons)

For higher-level students, Kobudo is built into our grading syllabus and taught from green belt through to black belt.

First class

What your first class looks like

No experience needed and nothing to pay on the day you watch. Here is exactly how it goes.

  • Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early to fill out a short athletic waiver. You do not need to call ahead to book in.
  • Wear comfortable clothes for the first few classes, a t-shirt and tracksuit pants are fine. All classes are done in bare feet.
  • Watch first if you prefer. Parents are welcome to observe, and anyone can try a class before joining.
  • No experience needed. We start everyone with basic moves and build difficulty over time, so your body adapts safely.

How you progress

Gradings

We hold gradings for advancement three times a year, and black belt gradings once a year. Gradings are not compulsory; every student sets their own goals and our instructors help them get there. We do not guarantee anyone a black belt; earning one is a relatively rare thing, and the surest path is simply showing up regularly, training diligently and avoiding injury. Students progress through their Kyu (junior) grades, then to Shodan Ho (probationary black belt), then Shodan (1st Dan), and on through the Dan ranks.

Our promise We are honest about this on purpose. Be wary of clubs that promise a fast black belt.

Gear

Uniforms

The traditional karate uniform, the Gi, is plain white cotton canvas. You can buy one through TKA; prices range from $50 to $110 depending on quality. Badges are supplied when you join. New students who start on our intro special get a free uniform to keep.
